I've been playing modded games lately and I've noticed that some of the more egregious crashes will take out the autosave as well (my current hypothesis is that these crashes must be occurring while the game is saving the autosave), this can be very frustrating and I would like to propose a (hopefully) simple solution: Have two (or more) autosave files which are cyclically overwritten. So if the last autosave was to "Autosave A", the next time the game autosaved, it would save to "Autosave B", then after that it would go back to "Autosave A" again, and so on.
