I have played a good bit and found that despair and Eldritch problems can be kept off by many things. I am on day 52 in a cold bio dome. I have average +5 on my workplaces and houses and my provisions counter is green. No church, no public house, nothing else. I also have 2 barracks built so everyone if showing "feels safe". So far no despair.
