So, firstly, forgive me for my ignorance of forum coding and website mechanics and things like that.

I have this awful habit of subjecting my terrible, terrible posts upon people I tentatively call my friends, and otherwise show them the forum, though they lack accounts (because they just don't understand!)

Still, it'd be nice if I could actually show them the Daggle thread. So, can Guests be allowed to see pictures and stuff?

I don't know if this is a security concern or whatever. But it'd be nice.

Guests have full access to the public forums, the only thing they are not allowed to do is to download attachments. This is a security measure but we may allow official files (patches, hotfixes, etc.) to be publicly accessible in the future. Is the problem you are having with guests not being able to download attachments?

Yeah, I suppose so. Not downloading, really, just viewing pictures, but I suppose in a technical sense these are the same thing.

But if it's a security measure, then I can't argue with that.

When I was last banned, I was unable to update my mods, nor even check threads with my logged in browser.

So I used a portable Firefox build. I never attempted to login, and I found that the site was basically unusable without a login.

Unless there is a valid reason to deny download ability to *ALL* attachments, why not have a checkbox so modders can allow their mods and images and such to be downloaded by users that are not logged in, and just omit the count for those downloads?

I know it is a pain in the ass, but there are times that others are away from home and do not want to login from a public WiFi hotspot. They have good reason to fear that someone may capture the packets of their login and brute force the hash to steal their account and spam viagra ads or something.

Oh BTW, discount viagra if you click this link... :D

Not necessarily there, but in general, making forum attachments public is a suicide wish for the bandwidth.

And either way, it's not like we can't just use Dropbox links instead (or "in addition"), those should be visible.

I suppose I cannot escape that reasoning, but there are times that Dropbox betrays details you would really wish were kept private. My real-life name is one such thing. (Yes, you can easily click one of my many Dropbox links to learn my full name without just learning one of my rather obvious handles.)

And there is still a somewhat significant number of people Dropbox will not serve due to the laws in their home Nation. Not that this is Gaslamps fault. (Faaaaax! :D)
