Is there any way to download mods DIRECTLY from steam workshop, as opposed to letting it automatically update Dungeons Of Dredmor/Mods/Subscribed?

I prefer to let Steam have as little control of my local files as possible.

Yes. Download the mod, find the file, change the extension, and install it normally. After that, unsubscribe from the mod.

That being said, there are more detailed instructions somewhere on the forum; I would've posted them here but I simply don't remember them now and outside of information about the location of the file ("somewhere") and the desired extension (either ".rar" or ".zip"), it's pretty much what I wrote now.

In the subscribed folder, the mod .dat are files you can just extract normally with 7zip or winrar or whatever. They'll give you the mod folders like normal mods. Then zip them up and put them in your normal mod folder. And then unsubscribe.

There's no way to do it without subscribing?

No. You can't do anything with data you don't have.

*Suddenly all Steam mods lose half of their subscribers*

you could find someone who has steam to copy the files and give them to you if they dont mind sharing.
