I think Nicholas is upset with us :(

Well, let's just say that hotfix 11b uses different encryption. (and no posting spoilers for anybody who got a glimpse at things. Tsk.) I also humbly suggest reading up on the history of nineteenth-century ciphers.

Did you use the Vigenère cipher? Probably with Odin or something?

Yes, it's the Vigenere cipher. The key isn't Odin, which is a pretty weaksauce key all in all.

The key length is 9 characters, we'll give you that as a hint.

EDIT: Incidentally, I would actually start by ripping from the EXE again, which I'll allow if it's encrypted. Cracking a Vigenere cipher is an eduational experience for the whole family; plus, I think if you have to reconstruct missing letters *and* try to get the key going you might have a difficult time of it.

I used regex to find the string I got above in the section, and followed it to get the cipher.
Now I just need to write up a program to process the strings.

    Okay, so what's the cipher?

Well for some reason I got clockworl, though I'd expect it to be clockwork. It's trivial enough to try both though.

I picked the worst language to do this in because I wanted to learn more with it. This is actually becoming very difficult to code because of the inclusion of spaces.

    Well I have some strings
the uncomfortable pillow why is it uncomfortable who knows
the colony of new sogwood has been lost all hope is lost
we must keep a stiff upper lip in these troubled times
    for the empire
lord palmer stoke was right about everything

I really should have used imperative programming and knocked this out in a few minutes.

What are you trying to do this in, Lisp?

Haskell. I need to split the infinite string of "clockworkclockworkclockwork" wherever I split the main string, which is annoying.
Doesn't matter though, I just have to put the spaces back myself. Also since I don't know the starting position of any given string I need to run this 9 times yay.

My vote is that he's programmed 5.25 floppy disk platters to speak the words to him. There are Apple 2 Mac Classics cut in half to expose their drives littered across his floor. Some of them still glimmer occasionally with indecipherable error messages.

No, wait, he'd just decipher those using COBOL.

... yeah, well, way to handicap yourself with the Most Impractical Language Ever. :D

(Just remember! A monoid is simply a monad in the category of endofunctors... or is it the other way around?)

EDIT: It *is* the other way around - a monad is a monoid in the category of endofunctors. See, all that category theory paid off from my math degree...

So, should I post every string here (without punctuation or capitalization of course)

Also shame on you for "with less bone chips"

If you've decoded them correctly, sure.

Also, food products with less bone chips in them is thoroughly plausible: see, for instance, http://www.sucrose.com/bonechar.html - today, some sugar manufacturers still use bone meal to re-color powdered sugar. I understand this makes life fun for David as a vegan.
